Hispanic workers make up an estimated 12%of the media industry's workforce

Outside of media, Hispanics make up 18% of all workers.

2019 Estimated percentage of Hispanic workers by media Industry sub-sector:

  • Motion picture and video 16%

  • Sound recording 15%

  • Radio/TV broadcasting, cable and subscription programming 14%

  • Other information services 9%

  • Newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers 8%

Hispanic representation was higher in camera operator and media equipment operations, but lower for writing positions.

  • Music directors and composers 15%

  • Artists and related workers 14%

  • TV, video, and film camera operators and editors 14%

  • Broadcast announcers and radio DJs 12%

  • Actors 12%

  • Photographers 11%

  • News analysts and journalists 11%

  • Producers and directors 10%

  • Graphic designers 10%

  • Other designers 10%

  • Writers and authors 8%

  • Editors 7%

A study of 1,000 popular movies from 2007-2019 found that about 5% of all speaking characters on screen and 4% of directors were Hispanic. 

The Lack Of Latinos In Media Could Affect How Others View Them, The Government Says:

  • U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, has made the inclusion of Latinos in media a principal issue, imploring Hollywood studio directors, journalism leaders and book publishers to include their perspectives.

  • Castro says the lack of accurate representation, especially in Hollywood, means at the very best that Americans don't get a full understanding of Latinos and their contributions. At worst — especially when Latinos are solely portrayed as drug dealers or criminals — it invites politicians to exploit negative stereotypes for political gain, Castro said.

Latino Representation in Film: Erasure On Screen & Behind the Camera Across 1,300 Popular Movies 2007 - 2019:

  • Out of 51,158 total characters, 5% were Latino

  • In 2019, only 7 films (or 6.2%) had Latino leads/co-leads

  • 54% of that 6.2% were women, including 3 women age 45+

  • From 2007-2019, only 2.2% of lead roles went to Latino actors

  • Only 6 were Afro-Latino and 3 of those were in 2019

  • In 2019, out of 100 top-grossing films

  • 35 films had no Latino characters

  • 59 films had no Latina characters

  • 95 films had no Latino characters with disabilities

  • 98 had no LGBTQ+ Latino characters

  • Across 1300 top grossing films 2007-2019

  • 4.2% had Latino directors, made up of 35 individual directors

  • Ratio of white male directors to Latino directors is 50 to 1

  • Only 3 directors were Latina 

  • Casting directors and producers

  • 3.3% of 2,041 casting directors for 1,300 top films were Latino

  • 93 were men, 26 were women

  • Less than 1% of 3,953 producers were Latina
